Class Policies and Procedures
During the term students will develop their skills in woodworking through a project-based approach which will result in the student being able to take home with them a number of beautiful pieces of woodwork.
Class sizes are limited to eight (8) students working with two (2) teachers. Students must be 18 years old or over.
At our first class you will be asked to complete an Emergency Contact Form. Any personal information that is provided by you is managed in accordance with the Federal Privacy Act 1988, and the Privacy and Personal Information Act 1998.
ENROLLING AND BOOKING INTO A CLASS
Enrolling into a class is completed on-line by providing your contact details and completing the booking form.
Once a class is full, a waitlist will be created with students being advised via email of having been placed on the waitlist.
FEES AND PAYMENTS
A nine-week term costs $990.
The cost of the term must be paid in full at the time of booking into classes
Payments can be made by credit card, debit card or direct deposit once you have booked into your classes. Direct deposit details and details of card accepted are available when payment is being made.
Term fees are due two weeks (10 working days) prior to commencement of classes.
If term fees are not paid in full by due date, a position will be offered to a person on the waiting list.
Failing to turn up to your booked classes will result in loss of any term fees already paid.
Note: Fees are inclusive of insurance, supervision of, and induction in. occupational health and safety (OHS practices) for machine operation. Insurance coverage is only valid once term fees have been paid in full.
Should you wish to book into a class which is scheduled in another term a deposit of 40% ($380) is required to confirm a place in the term. The deposit is taken off the total term fee.
The deposit for a term booked one or more terms in advance is refundable when more than 21 days’ notice of withdrawal from the term prior to commencement of the term is given. Notice is required in writing via email. Should 21 days’ notice not be given no refund will be provided.
Deposits are used to purchase materials prior to a term commencing and we may have turned other students away after you have booked.
We do not provide refunds if you simply change your mind or can't make it to the term that you have booked, unless 21 days’ notice has been provided.
CHANGES TO BOOKING
Where possible we will accommodate one change of date per original booking providing the change of date request is made a minimum of 14 days prior to the commencement of your booked term.
In the event of either State or Commonwealth Government directives to suspend our business activities due to a COVID related lockdown, we will contact you with alternative dates for classes. Should you contract COVID and have to isolate for an extended period of time we will try to re-enrol you into another class or provide a partial refund.
Make up and missed classes
Please consider your schedule carefully before booking your classes.
We will allow a maximum of two make up classes per nine-week term. Make up classes need to be scheduled with your teacher and ideally need to take place in the week that you have missed your original class.
While we totally understand that life often gets in the way of the best laid plans, we also can't guarantee that we'll be able to provide you with another opportunity to make up a missed session. We do not want you to pay for something you do not receive, but the system has to work for us, as well as for you.
NO-SHOW TO BOOKED CLASSES
Failing to turn up to your booked term of classes will result in the loss of any deposit or term fee already paid.
TIMBER AND EQUIPMENT
Timber, tools and equipment are provided for the first six (6) projects to be undertaken. The school also supplies consumables such as glue, sandpaper, timber filler, screws, finish, masks and protective equipment. The student may also supply their own finish – oil or lacquer.
For the final bring your own (BYO) project (seventh) to be undertaken, students will be responsible for purchasing their own timber. The suitability of the timber and fittings will be discussed with the teacher to ensure they are appropriate for the chosen project. Students will then be responsible for purchasing their own timber and organising for it to be transported to the school
Clothing and footwear should be suitable for a workshop environment (but not heavy industrial), providing protection against wood chips, dropped objects, and spills or splashes of varnishes and glues, while hair should be restrained or covered to avoid entanglement with machinery.
Open toed shoes are never acceptable and students will not be permitted entry to the school if these are worn.
We are firmly committed to a culture of safe work practices. Your safety and the safety of your fellow students is our priority.
All machines within our facilities are strictly off-limits to students until students have been inducted. Once inducted machines can only be used by students when they are under the direct supervision of a teacher. Your teacher must be present and must have granted permission for you to use any woodworking machine.
WORK HEALTH AND SAFETY
All relevant principles of the Work Health and Safety Act 2011 will be observed so that staff and students may learn and work in a healthy and safe environment.
All students will be given first aid training relevant to working with woodworking tools and machinery at the commencement of the term.
LIABILITY WAIVER AND RELEASE
At the commencement of your nine-week term you will be asked to sign a waiver acknowledging that you are aware of the inherent risks involved in taking part in woodworking classes and in using woodworking tools and equipment. Further to this, in signing the waiver you will agree that Chisel and Dowel Woodworking School Pty Ltd and Splinter Workshop will not held responsible for any injuries that may occur during the term.
In the event of an unresolved outcome from raising the grievance or matter initially with their teacher students should forward details of their grievance or matter in writing to firstname.lastname@example.org .
Within two (2) business days of receiving your complaint we will acknowledge receipt of your complaint.
Within seven (7) business days of receiving your complaint we will investigate your complaint objectively and impartially, by considering the information you have provided us, our actions in relation to your dealings with us and any other information which may be available, that could assist us in investigating your complaint.
Following our investigation, we will notify you via email of our findings and any actions we may have taken in regards to your complaint. Where appropriate, we may amend our school practices or policies.
We will record your complaint for continuous improvement process and monitoring through regular review, your personal information will be recorded in accordance with relevant privacy legislation.
